It was when I was at university. I had one subject that was computer programing at first year. I must say that I hated it. I had only a few classes and worst of all is that at the end of the year our teachers demanded us to know it. It was like a nightmare. How could we know something that we had not learn ? Anyway I asked one friend for help and I managed to pass in that subject.
As you may know at university we couldn't cheat and I always had bad memory. So when I was on the second year I bought one calculator from CASIO that was programable and could memorize some phrases. By acident I bought also a book of basic and I started to experiment those programs with the calculator and for my surprise it worked !
I tryied then to understand how basic worked and, for my surprise too, it was not so difficult as it seemed in the first place.
A few time later I bought a calculator more sophisticated from casio too that even nowadays is used among academic people. It was the fx 850 p.
Because I always enjoyed the portability I ended up buying the first notebook ever made. It was the Toshiba 1000 SE. It didn't have hard disk but it was very shynning for that time.
Still at university I managed to do a program for autocad in autolisp with it after my professor saying it wouldn't be possible without hard disk.
Irony of fate I sold that computer to that professor and I bought a new model but with a hard disk of 20 Mb! I still have that computer and maybe it will end in a museum.
After that I bought a desk computer that is my everyday partner and friend...
